Quakers in the Chilterns Area
I was asked to redesign this site when the previous webmaster moved out of the area. The client asked me for my professional opinion on what changes needed to be made and I identified several key areas:
- Accessibility: the menu interface did not work in some browsers, including my contact's, and the document structuring made it difficult for screen readers and search engines to process.
- Layout: due to the positioning of elements, the site only appeared correctly in Internet Explorer. Using another browser or changing the text size caused text and pictures to overlap.
- Inconsistent design across the site.
The main draw for users of this site is the useful content, but it was being overwhelmed by the interface problems. I created a menu system that has better cross-browser compatibility and gave the site a complete make-over with a consistent design. The colour-scheme enhances the photography without distracting from the content.
This site was originally designed with newcomers to Quakerism in mind. The content on the majority of pages does not change often and I suggested the introduction of a regularly updated news page to keep the site fresh and reassure visitors that it is being maintained. The news page will be a useful feature for current members as well as newcomers, particularly in light of the restoration work currently underway at one Meeting House.
